American Made Quality

Our Coal Gun automatic coal boilers are designed to be the ultimate boilers, needing only minimal seasonal upkeep. Designed to be long-lasting, many of our units are in their fourth decade of operation.

Our skilled, dedicated team makes each Alternate Heating System’s Coal Gun from premium materials. Each unit is tested thoroughly before leaving our facility to meet our high-quality standards. We guarantee that our product will have no issues with materials and craftsmanship. Each Coal Gun comes complete with the necessary controls for safe operation.

How It Functions

Anthracite coal (pea-size) is loaded into the hopper and flows into the coal pot (firebox). The draft fan pulls the air up through the fire, thus creating an extremely hot fire. The hot exhaust and some fly ash are pulled into our signature Swirl Chamber heat exchanger. The draft fan spins the ash and hot exhaust around in the heat exchanger, which allows more heat to be pulled out of the exhaust. The swirling fly ash will actually scrub the heat exchanger, allowing the Coal Gun to maintain its efficiency all season. The cooled exhaust gas enters the internal cyclone ash separator from our Swirl Chamber, where the remaining coal ash is removed.

As the grate removes the ash from the bottom of the fire, fresh coal is fed by gravity on top of the fire.

Swirl Chamber

Our signature heat exchanger outperforms in efficiency and maintenance intervals. The draft fan spins the hot exhaust around the chamber, increasing the heat pulled into the water. The spinning exhaust contains ash, which scrubs the 1/4” thick steel walls. Our Swirl Chamber achieves up to 85% efficiency, resulting in exhaust temps as low as 300F.

Full Lifetime Warranty Grate

The S130 and S260 models will never need to be replaced, guaranteed. Our grate design reduces maintenance issues typically found in coal stokers. Our stepped grate will not burn out or warp.

Thermo Ash-Monitoring Control

The secret to perfect ash is in our Thermo Ash Control. All Coal Gun boilers are equipped with the Thermo Ash-Monitoring Control, which optimizes fuel usage. This control system instantly regulates the temperature of the ash leaving the grate. Once it reaches the set temperature, it allows the grate to operate, dumping the ash until it senses the increased temperature of the unburnt coal. No adjustment from the factory setting is typically necessary to have the boiler perform at peak output throughout the entire burn season (a minor on-site adjustment may be required when the boiler is first installed). With the Thermo Ash-Monitoring controlled grate, the fire can remain lit for days during low-use periods.

Pressurized Vessel

Our coal boilers heat water, which is used to heat your home. To dramatically increase the boiler’s life, we engineer and build a pressurized vessel. A pressurized vessel needs thicker steel, qualified welders, and pressure testing. The Coal Guns require no maintenance to the water.

The Genius of Anthracite

Anthracite coal does not cause creosote or emit any smoke! There is no creosote build-up and no risk of a chimney fire since anthracite coal doesn’t produce any creosote. There should be no concern about fuel or gas leaks; Anthracite is ideal for long-term storage in any environment. Unlike wood, Anthracite never decays.

Anthracite coal burns hotter than oil, pellets, wood, or gas, so you get more BTUs per pound than most other fuels. It burns evenly throughout each loading period.

Anthracite coal burns very clean with virtually no smoke or particulate emissions. Emissions are under the maximum/minimum of EPA’s requirements, making Anthracite among the cleanest burning heating fuels.

Anthracite coal is one of the most economical heating fuel sources. Its pricing per million BTUs is below that of oil, gas pellets, electric, or wood.

You can find it in 40-pound bags to make it easier to carry. Compared to other types of stoves, Anthracite coal stoves require less maintenance.

Optional Fuel Backup

The indoor Coal Gun can be equipped with a backup system. The #2 fuel oil burner mounts to the coal boiler and fires into the swirl chamber, eliminating the need for another appliance, chimney, and all the extra installation that goes with it.
